Echoes of Self
What remains when the self becomes unstuck in time?
What echoes through us, long after we forget who we are?
Echoes of Self is a surreal portrait series by 1dontknows exploring the idea that identity is not fixed, but shifting, broken, and sometimes hard to understand. These are not portraits in the traditional sense—they are visual echoes: dreamlike collages stitched from memory, emotion, dream, and imagination.
Each of the twelve figures exists in a suspended moment, where time feels slow and reality gently unravels. Face absorbed with the clouds, Heads are replaced by flowers, minds fracture and multiply. Symbols repeat—books, keys, moons, and checkered spaces—reminding us of a language we once spoke in dreams.
Drawn from 1dontknows’ signature fusion of classicism and surrealism, the figures stand between presence and absence—faceless yet intimate, composed yet collapsing. Their bodies are vessels for memory, for silence, for longing. Their gestures look like rituals, as if they’re performing something deep and private, just for themselves.
This series doesn’t try to explain everything. Instead, it asks you to slow down and wonder:
Where does the self go when it’s no longer whole?
How can you see yourself in something you've never seen before?
Echoes of Self is a slow unmasking. A quiet fragmentation.
It is not about defining identity, but observing its unraveling.
Not about clarity, but resonance.
Not a mirror of who we are, but of what we’ve lost, hidden, or invented along the way.
These images do not offer answers. They offer echoes.
And maybe that is enough.
"A face not seen, but felt.
A self not fixed, but remembered in fragments."
